Pianist and composer Javier Rodriguez in collaboration with Stewart Gilchrist, the East London School of Yoga and Charlotte Hastings (Sounds Alchemical) premiered "Morpheus" on the 5th of June 2023. The experience provided an immersive sound journey, exploring new ways for story, sound and consciousness to interact, considering how sound can support individuals to rest deeply or to find relief from sleep disorders such as insomnia.

Characterised by both nocturnal and diurnal symptoms, insomnia is one of the most common health issues of our time. With the focus of “Morpheus” being the efficacy of music as a therapy for insomnia, the 75-minute session combines various sonic techniques to aid sleep by helping the audience feel relaxed and at ease.

The slow-paced movements of the piano and other instruments that appear in the soundscape, including Crystal Tones singing bowls, voice, water and more, invite a deeply sensory experience for the audience and can lead to new physical sensations and enhanced proprioreception (awareness of how it feels inside the body). Our hypothesis is that this happens as heart and brain wave states alter, and as the program of events progresses we will be offering some participants the opportunity to have their heart and brain waves monitored throughout.

Enjoy this album as one long sonic experience - get ready to lay down and close your eyes for the next 90 minutes. Just rest, the journey will begin soon…
